I can't imagine the sheer horror of hand to hand combat. Sharp pointed things that can tear you apart. The testosterone must have been so high that the sight of carnage, blood and men screaming and dying must have been ignored. When you see the last few of your comrades get torn to shreds, it's pretty much survival. There is no glory in fighting your last stand. Best to just figure out how to get out of there and run and be alive. The Roman's on the very last line must have had others who had escaped.
