🚩 I am very pleased to share with you “Turenne: Campaign of 1674”, which outlines the brilliance of maneuver that even Napoleon admired. In the summer of 1674, France’s Marshal Henri de la Tour d’Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne, found himself facing one of the most perilous tests of his career. Europe was convulsed by the War of the Dutch, and the Holy Roman Empire had cast its weight behind France’s enemies. The Rhine frontier, long a region of uneasy peace, was now a corridor of fire and steel.

Turenne, seasoned by decades of war, moved with the precision of a master strategist. The Rhine crossings became scenes of constant maneuvering before the coming decisive clash. As December set in, snow blanketed the valleys, masking troop movements and blurring the lines between friend and foe. Turenne’s scouts reported enemy columns shifting under cover of darkness, their intentions as cold and sharp as the winter air.

Something was coming—something that would not only decide the fate of this campaign, but perhaps reshape the very balance of power in Europe. And as Turenne looked across the frozen fields, he knew the hour was almost upon him.

ESA’s new Vega-C rocket lifted off for its inaugural flight VV21 at 15:13 CEST/13:13 UTC/10:13 local time from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. With new first and second stages and an uprated fourth stage, Vega-C increases performance to about 2.3 t in a reference 700 km polar orbit, from the 1.5 t capability of its predecessor, Vega. For flight VV21, Vega-C’s payload is LARES-2, a scientific mission of @AsiTVit and six research CubeSats from France, Italy and Slovenia.

    Webb launch campaign highlights

Highlights of the launch campaign for the James Webb Space Telescope, from its arrival at Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, weeks of launch preparations, to launch on board an Ariane 5, and separation of the spacecraft and solar panel deployment.

Now in space and on its way to L2, Webb will undergo a complex unfolding sequence. In the months after, the instruments will be turned on and their capabilities tested. After half a year in space, Webb will start its routine science observations.

Webb will see farther into our origins: from the Universe’s first galaxies, to the birth of stars and planets, to exoplanets with the potential for life, and our own Solar System.

  • PromISSe launch campaign – now in 3D!

PromISSe launch campaign – now in 3D!

Follow ESA astronaut André Kuipers and his crewmates, NASA astronaut Donald Pettit and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kononeko, on their journey from Baikonur cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan, up to their launch onboard a Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS).

On 21 December 2011, André embarked on ESA’s fourth long-duration mission to the ISS, “PromISSe”. During his five months onboard this human outpost in space, Andre is serving as a flight engineer for Expedition 30.

This exceptional 3D video shows some of the main events before launch, including: the city of Baikonur, the avenue of cosmonauts with the tree once planted by Yuri Gagarin, the Gagarin Museum, the roll-out of Soyuz in the early morning hours, the vertical erection of the rocket on the launch pad, the pre-launch press conference, the ready-to-fly report of the crew commander, and of course – the amazing light show of a night launch from the Gagarin launch pad in Baikonur.

Stereoscopic 3D glasses are required to properly enjoy the full 3D effect of this footage.

André and his fellow crew members will return to Earth by the end of May 2012.
