Satellite data aiding relief efforts after Türkiye–Syria earthquakes

Türkiye and Syria are reeling from one of the worst earthquakes to strike the region in almost a century. Tens of thousands of people have been killed with many more injured in this tragedy. Turkish authorities, along with the United Nations and the International Federation Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies, activated the International Charter ‘Space and Major Disasters’. The Charter provides satellite images of the affected areas to support local teams with their rescue efforts. Philippe Bally, ESA Charter Representative, explains.

Gaia data release 3: exploring our multi-dimensional Milky Way

Since its launch in 2013 ESA’s Gaia observatory has been mapping our galaxy from Lagrange point 2, creating the most accurate and complete multi-dimensional map of the Milky Way. By now two full sets of data have been released, the first set in 2016 and a second one in 2018. These data releases contained stellar positions, distances, motions across the sky, and colour information, among others. Now on 13 June 2022 a third and new full data set will be released. This data release will contain even more and improved information about almost 2 billion stars, Solar System objects and extragalactic sources. It also includes radial velocities for 33 million stars, a five-time increase compared to data release 2. Another novelty in this data set is the largest catalogue yet of binary stars in the Milky Way, which is crucial to understand stellar evolution.

Preserving data for our future

Satellites provide vast quantities of data. While these data are processed and used by scientists and analysts to understand and monitor Earth, they are also carefully archived. Through its Heritage Data Programme, we ensures the preservation of and access to archived Earth observation satellite data for scientists, policy makers and value-adding companies. This allows us to look back at the history of planet Earth, and plan for the future.

Gaia second data release

The second data release of ESA’s Gaia mission has produced an extraordinary catalogue of over one and a half billion stars in our galaxy. Based on observations between July 2014 to May 2016, it includes the most accurate information yet on the positions, brightness, distance, motion, colour and temperature of stars in the Milky Way as well as information on asteroids and quasars.

2017 Space App Camp

The sixth Space App Camp was held at ESA’s establishment in Frascati, Italy, in September 2017. The camp offers access to the latest space data – particularly from the European Copernicus programme – to app developers, who work to make the information accessible to a broad audience. Twenty-four developers from 14 countries attended the 2017 camp. In this short video, participants talk about why they attended and what they hoped to achieve.

ESRIN: ESA’s Eye on Earth

Located in Frascati, Italy, ESRIN – known as the ESA Centre for Earth Observation – is one of the five ESA specialised centres situated in Europe. The mission and payload operations of ESA’s Earth observation satellites are managed here and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.Within ESRIN, a key role in Europe’s space effort has been undertaken with the development of the new small launcher, Vega, which took its maiden voyage in February 2012.
ESRIN designs and develops all ESA-wide software for corporate applications and is responsible for developing security measures for classified space programmes. The European Centre for Space Records (ECSR) is also based at ESRIN. The ECSR appraises and preserves the valuable technical records of completed ESA projects together with their management archives to safeguard this valuable knowledge for generations to come.Finally, ESRIN is home to ESA’s Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre. The centre serves as the central access point to a network of European near-Earth object data sources and information providers being established under ESA’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Programme.For more information, visit the ESRIN site.

Autoencoder Explained

How does an autoencoder work? Autoencoders are a type of neural network that reconstructs the input data its given. But we don’t care about the output, we care about the hidden representation its learned. Its a lower dimensional compression of the input that preserves its features. We can use this learned representation for tasks like image colorization, dialogue generation, and anomaly detection.

Press Conference: First Data Release from ESA’s Gaia Mission

Launched in December 2013, Gaia is destined to create the most accurate map yet of the Milky Way. By making accurate measurements of the positions and motions of stars in the Milky Way, it will answer questions about the origin and evolution of our home galaxy.

The first intermediate data release, containing among other things three-dimensional positions and two-dimensional motions of a subset of two million stars, demonstrates that Gaia’s measurements are as precise as planned, paving the way to create the full map of one billion stars to be released towards the end of 2017.
