    ESA counts down to Asteroid Day with news on riskiest asteroid

    A 50-metre asteroid out there has lingered at the top of risk lists around the globe. Initial observations showed 2021 QM1 had a chance of striking Earth in 2052, and frustratingly, follow-up observations soon became impossible. Not only was it outshone by the Sun at a pivotal moment, but QM1 has been receding from view as it moves away from Earth in its current orbit.

    ESA’s Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre together with the European Southern Observatory made finding and assessing the risk from 2021 QM1 a top priority, and this June they had a chance to capture the risky asteroid as it edged away from the brilliant Sun. Now extremely faint in the sky, it would take one of the best telescopes in the world to spot it, and if they do, it will be the faintest asteroid ever detected. Did the team find our risky asteroid? Will it, one day, find us?

Speakers at the event included ESA Director General Jan Wörner, Head of ESA/ESRIN Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director of Human and Robotic Exploration, Italian Space Agency President Giorgio Saccoccia and ESA Utilisation Planning Team Leader Kirsten MacDonell.

    Artificial intelligence for Earth observation

    During ESA’s ɸ-week on 12–16 November in Italy, Patrick Helber from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence explains how artificial intelligence is being trained with Earth observation data and images such as that from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission so features can be detected automatically. This can then be used to classify land cover types automatically, for example.

    50 years of ESRIN

    ESRIN, ESA’s centre for Earth observation in Frascati, near Rome, is one of the agency’s main specialised centres in Europe, and its founding ceremony took place 50 years ago on 27 September 1968.

    Today, ESRIN manages the exploitation phase of the Earth Observation satellites and the ground segment for ESA and third-party Earth observation satellites, maintaining the largest archive of environmental data in Europe and coordinating over 20 ground stations and ground segment facilities in Europe. It also hosts the project team managing the Vega small-launcher programme.

    Diego Fernandez and Chris Stewart welcome Earth observation attendants and provide their opening remarks.

    Every two years, ESA’s Earth observation summer schools draws young scientists from all over the world to learn more about remote sensing, Earth system science, modelling and monitoring, and how data can be used to better understand the world we live in. In 2018, the two-week summer school is held on 30 July to 10 August. While the students engage in practical sessions in the afternoons, the morning lectures were streamed live.

    2017 Space App Camp

    The sixth Space App Camp was held at ESA’s establishment in Frascati, Italy, in September 2017. The camp offers access to the latest space data – particularly from the European Copernicus programme – to app developers, who work to make the information accessible to a broad audience. Twenty-four developers from 14 countries attended the 2017 camp. In this short video, participants talk about why they attended and what they hoped to achieve.

    Located in Frascati, Italy, ESRIN – known as the ESA Centre for Earth Observation – is one of the five ESA specialised centres situated in Europe. The mission and payload operations of ESA’s Earth observation satellites are managed here and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.Within ESRIN, a key role in Europe’s space effort has been undertaken with the development of the new small launcher, Vega, which took its maiden voyage in February 2012.
    ESRIN designs and develops all ESA-wide software for corporate applications and is responsible for developing security measures for classified space programmes. The European Centre for Space Records (ECSR) is also based at ESRIN. The ECSR appraises and preserves the valuable technical records of completed ESA projects together with their management archives to safeguard this valuable knowledge for generations to come.Finally, ESRIN is home to ESA’s Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre.
