During an event at NASA Headquarters in Washington Thursday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra united to note progress their respective agencies are making in space and on Earth toward President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden’s Cancer Moonshot initiative.
Also participating in the event was Dr. W. Kimryn Rathmell, director of the National Cancer Institute, as well as NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Frank Rubio, both of whom each recently served extended science missions 250 miles off Earth aboard the International Space Station where they conducted cancer-related research.

By cultivating human endothelial cells in space, researchers are gaining knowledge about the way our blood vessels function. This could help prevent and treat diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes and thrombosis here on Earth, while keeping astronauts healthy in space.
In this video, biochemist and molecular biologist Dr Markus Wehland discusses the Spheroids experiment, which ran on the International Space Station during ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s Principia mission in 2016.
Cells cultivated in microgravity during this experiment assembled into globular and tubular structures. These structures were similar to the inner lining of blood vessels inside our bodies, but had never been achieved before by scientists cultivating cells on Earth.
Knowledge about cell growth and structure gained through this study could aid the development of tissue engineering techniques to replace damaged blood vessels in patients. It could also improve the efficiency and safety of drugs that help regulate vessel development.
It is good news for those affected by cardiovascular disease and a great example of the way in which research in microgravity is enhancing life on Earth.

His vision is to build technology-enabled self-sustaining communities. He actively engages in
community empowerment and education initiatives especially among girls through
‘MetooMentor’ – an NPO that mentors young women to innovate through technology.
The ingenious device developed by him monitors and tracks the vitals of pregnant women living
in the remote villages of India, transmitting the collected data over the cloud to the nearest health
center by incorporating AI and DEEP LEARNING algorithms.

He believes that we can achieve this only by bridging the digital divide in the society and by empowering the powerless/vulnerable.He actively engages in community empowerment and education initiatives especially among girls through ‘MetooMentor’ – an NPO that mentors young women to innovate through technology.With a handful of dedicated volunteers, He reached over 1000 girls in Madurai.He has been honoured as the top 5 Technology Explorers in India by Nasscom.
