    5 Moon facts you probably didn’t know! 🌝 #shorts

    Happy International Moon Day!

    54 years ago on 20 July 1969, Apollo 11’s crew made history by being the first people to step foot on the moon.

    Today, we’ll be sharing some fun facts about our celestial neighbour! 🌚🌝

    1️⃣ Twelve people have walked on the Moon. Between 1969 and 1972, astronauts left scientific experiments on the lunar surface and came back to Earth with nearly 400 kg of rocks and soil. All 12 Apollo Moonwalkers reported symptoms similar to hay fever. Lunar dust is made of sharp, abrasive particles, and it is not known how toxic it is to humans.

    2️⃣ You would also weigh less on the Moon! With only 1/6 the gravity, you would be able to jump higher and throw objects farther than on Earth.

    3️⃣ If you look at the Moon through a telescope, you will see brilliant flashes of light. Nobody is sending you signals though – they are meteorites hitting our rocky neighbour at great speed.

    4️⃣ If you were to live on the Moon, both day and night would be two weeks long! As humankind goes to the Moon, astronauts will need to work with this new day/night cycle

    5️⃣ The Moon hides one ‘face’ from us, we call it the far side of the Moon, and we never get to see it from Earth. What do you think is on the far side of the Moon?

    The “lunar hay fever”, as @NASA astronaut Harrison Schmitt described it during the Apollo 17 mission created symptoms in all 12 people who have stepped on the Moon. From sneezing to nasal congestion, in some cases it took days for the reactions to fade. Inside the spacecraft, the dust smelt like burnt gunpowder.

    The Moon missions left an unanswered question of lunar exploration – one that could affect humanity’s next steps in the Solar System: can lunar dust jeopardise human health?

    On Saturday, Nov. 26, at 8:42 a.m EST (13:42 UTC) the Orion spacecraft will break the record for farthest distance traveled by a spacecraft designed to carry humans to deep space and safely return them to Earth. This distance is currently held by the Apollo 13 spacecraft. In this video, Apollo astronauts and flight directors give their insights into the Apollo program, the nation’s reaction then, and how the Artemis program will benefit the nation today. As we go back to the Moon, Artemis will prepare us to travel even deeper into space.

    What is ESA’s Moonlight initiative?

    Going to the Moon was the first step. Staying there is the next ambition.

    ESA is a key partner in NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims to return people to the Moon by the end of the decade. Dozens of other international public and private missions are setting their sights on the lunar surface in the coming years.

    But to achieve a permanent and sustainable presence on the Moon, reliable and autonomous lunar communications and navigation services are required.

    This is why ESA is working with its industrial partners on the Moonlight initiative, to become the first off-planet commercial telecoms and satellite navigation provider.

    Following their launch, three or four satellites will be carried into lunar orbit by a space tug and deployed one by one, to form a constellation of lunar satellites. The number and specification of these satellites are currently being defined.

    The constellation’s orbits are optimised to give coverage to the lunar south pole, whose sustained sunlight and polar ice make it the focus of upcoming missions.

    Moonlight will provide data capacities sufficient to serve these planned and future missions, with a navigation service that enables accurate real-time positioning for all lunar missions.

  • Prospecting the Moon

    Prospecting the Moon

    A European drill and sample analysis package will search for water ice and other chemicals under the lunar surface onboard the Russian-led Luna-27 mission to the South Polar region of the Moon.

    Operating at temperatures of less than –100 °C and drilling over one metre down, Prospect first needs to penetrate the lunar surface. This video features a series of drilling tests carried out at the Leonardo facilities in Italy in 2019.

    Prospect includes a miniature laboratory called ProSPA which will analyse the soil samples retrieved by the drill. Precise measurements will help unearth the secrets of the Moon’s history and indicate whether future explorers could use lunar resources on their missions to help set up a lunar base.

    The lunar south polar region is of great interest to lunar researchers and explorers because the low angle of the Sun over the horizon leads to areas of partial or even complete shadow. These shadowed areas and permanently dark crater floors, where sunlight never reaches, are believed to hide water ice and other frozen substances that could be analysed to better understand the natural processes that formed them, and used to produce resources such as oxygen and propellant in the future.

    Lunar Exploration – ESA’s missions

    50 years after the first human landed on the Moon, what is next? The exploration of our Moon is a global endeavour with Europeans and commercial actors playing a large role. The European Space Agency has developed an exploration programme based on four main missions.

    Luna Resurs is a partnership with the Russian agency Roscosmos that will carry European technology to land precisely and safely on the Moon (PILOT) and to extract and analyse samples of the lunar terrain (PROSPECT).

    Orion and the European Service Module will return humans to the Moon and take advantage of the new technology for human space transportation. Orion, the NASA spacecraft, will bring humans farther than they have never been before. ESA is providing the service modules that will provide propulsion, life support, power, air and water, and control the temperature in the crew module.

    ISRU aims to extract and process resources on the Moon into useful products and services: “In-situ resource utilisation”. A mission to explore lunar resources could be a reality from 2025. The goal is to produce drinkable water or breathable oxygen on the Moon.

    The Heracles mission could take of in 2028 to allow us to gain knowledge on human-robotic interaction while landing a spacecraft on the Moon, collecting samples with a rover operated from the lunar Gateway and send samples back to Earth.

    Humans will have to breath, drink and eat while living on the Moon. They will need energy to perform tasks using their robotic companions and materials to build structures. For a sustainable approach to space exploration these resources cannot be carried from Earth but have to be found on the Moon itself.

    Angel Abbud Madrid is the Director of the Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), where he leads a multidisciplinary research programme on the human and robotic exploration of space and the utilisation of its resources. He is also the Director of the CSM Space Resources Program, the first academic programme in the world focused on educating scientists, engineers, economists, entrepreneurs and policymakers in the developing field of space resources.
