    ESA Preview 2023

    At the start of 2023 the European Space Agency ESA is happily looking forward to another year filled with a host of thrilling new missions, cutting edge science and the continued effort to guarantee independent access to space for Europe. We will see the first images of the first Meteosat Third Generation satellite, the launch of the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, and of Euclid and another Sentinel-1 satellite launch. It will also be the year of Ariane 6 which will make its inaugural flight and the first Dane in space, Andreas Mogensen will return to the ISS as the new astronaut-candidates commence their training. Near the end of the year the second Space Summit will further cement ESA’s ambitions for Space in Europe.

    ESA preview 2022

    As always, a new year brings new and exciting missions and launches for ESA. In science the world looks forward to the first image releases of the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope and the third data release for Gaia, both teaching us more about our galaxy and Universe. ESA’s new Mars rover will be launched with the ExoMars mission, and we will also see the maiden flights of Vega-C, Ariane 6 and the Artemis I flight. Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti will return to the ISS for her second mission and a new class of astronauts will be presented to the world. After the groundwork has been laid in 2021 a new Ministerial Council Meeting will gather to look at the future of ESA, and the need for ESA and Europe to accelerate space and integrated space technology into the fabric of our lives.

    Vom retransmite LIVE de la NASA, cu Claudiu Tanaselia (parsec.ro) si invitatii nostri: Dumitru Prunariu, singurul cosmonaut roman, Bogdan Marcu (inginer de motoare de racheta la Blue Origin, compania lui Jeff Bezos), Aurora Simionescu (astronom, Olanda), Adrian Sonka, Cristian Roman, Alexandru Mironov, si alte nume faine.

    Va fi un eveniment mediatic intens, cu multe camere de filmat. Numai roverul are 19 camere de luat vederi si doua microfoane. Va fi pentru prima data cand vom auzi cu adevarat sunetul de pe alte planete! In plus, roverul este dotat cu un mini-elicopter, care va fi primul ce va zbura in alte lumi. Si acesta are camere de luat vederi (de fapt, singurul lucru pe care il are, mai mult nu poate duce pentru a atmosfera martiana nu este suficient de densa). Ca totul sa mearga, roverul trebuie sa treaca de cele “spate minute de aterizare” si sa puna cu bine “piciorul” pe suprafata martiala.

    As the world leaves behind the strange and challenging year of 2020, we look towards 2021 with a mixture of relief and expectation. And this is the same at ESA, where we look forward to a brighter and very exciting 2021. This year will see Vega-C making its maiden flight, two ESA astronauts start long-duration missions on board the International Space Station, and BepiColombo and Solar Orbiter continuing their voyages around the Solar System. Also this year, we will say farewell to our current Director General Jan Wörner as his tenure ends, while welcoming into office his successor, Josef Aschbacher.

    Preview of Two Upcoming Spacewalks at the International Space Station

    Tune in on Wed., June 24 at 2 p.m. EDT to learn about two upcoming spacewalks to begin the replacement of batteries for one of the space station’s power channels, as well as the latest on the SpaceX Dragon Endeavour’s mission to the orbiting laboratory. 

    On Fri., June 26 and Wed., July 1, NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Robert Behnken will exit the station’s Quest airlock to replace aging nickel-hydrogen batteries for one of two power channels on the far starboard truss with new lithium-ion batteries that arrived on a Japanese cargo spacecraft last month. The spacewalks will begin at around 7:35 a.m., and will last as long as seven hours.

    The year 2020 will see new and exciting European space missions, from journeys to the Sun and back to Mars, and from innovative telecommunications satellites to the continuing operation of Copernicus Earth observation satellites. The second ExoMars mission will see a  European rover on the ‘Red Planet’ and the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission will be launched around the Sun. This year marks probably the last time an ESA astronaut flies on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft – future European astronaut flights are likely to be on the new US spacecraft, in particular the NASA Orion vehicles, which feature European-built Service Modules, now being prepared for flights to the Moon and beyond. The year also sees the first flight of ESA’s new Vega-C launcher from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, where Ariane 6 operations are also taking shape for its first flight.

    2019 preview

    ESA is looking forward to another interesting year in 2019.

    ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano will return to the International Space Station, in Science Cheops will look at exoplanets, while the EDRS-C satellite will start the era of super-fast data relay on orbit.

    In Kourou preparation will go full speed for Vega-C, a more powerful version of ESA’s light weight launcher, also paving the way for future Ariane 6.

    And in November in Spain at ‘Space 19+’, the Council at Ministerial level, ESA will propose to its Member States a bold vision for a strong Europe in space.

    Preview 2018

    After a fruitful 2017 with many exciting launches and the end of some historic missions, ESA is ready for the year to come. 2018 will see the 10th anniversary of the International Space Station’s Columbus module and an ESA astronaut taking the helm of the ISS as commander. There will be more launches of new Earth observation and exploration satellites and ESA will venture to the innermost planet in our Solar System. 2018 will also mark the completion of the first part of the Copernicus constellation observing the Earth and of the full Galileo constellation, Europe’s own satellite navigation system.

    2012 ESA Missions Preview

    This video presents the key events in 2012 for ESA.

    André Kuipers continues his PromISSe mission aboard the International Space Station until May, the 4th ESA long duration mission. During his stay the third European ATV cargo ship will bring food and supplies to the orbital outpost. Early in the year the new Vega launcher will make its qualifying flight from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. The end of the year will be marked by an ESA Conference at Ministerial level, a major decision point for the future of Europe in Space.
