    Ride Along with Artemis Around the Moon (Official NASA Video)

    Cameras on NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft give us amazing views of our adventure around the Moon. See up close views of the Moon from external cameras as well as the view from inside the capsule.

    Orion is the only spacecraft capable of carrying humans from Earth on Artemis missions to deep space and bringing them back to Earth from the vicinity of the Moon. More than just a crew module, Orion has a launch abort system to keep astronauts safe if an emergency happens during launch, and a European-built service module that is the powerhouse that fuels and propels Orion and keeps astronauts alive with water, oxygen, power, and temperature control, as well as a heat shield that can handle high-speed returns from deep space. SLS is the most powerful rocket in the world and the only rocket capable of launching Orion with astronauts and their supplies on Artemis missions to the Moon.

    Orion launched on the SLS rocket from Launch Pad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022. Artemis I is an uncrewed flight test of our SLS rocket, Orion spacecraft, and exploration ground systems for future Artemis missions—which will provide the foundation to send humans to the lunar surface, develop a long-term presence on and around the Moon, and pave the way for humanity to set foot on Mars.

    Watch live as scientific investigations on ovarian cell development, climate change’s effects on mudflow structures, a study on how plants adapt to grow space, the first satellites from Uganda and Zimbabwe, and a bioprinter all travel aboard the 18th Northrop Grumman commercial resupply services mission to the International Space Station.

    The Cygnus spacecraft, named S.S. Sally Ride in dedication to the first American woman in space, is scheduled for liftoff no earlier than Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, at 5:27 a.m. EST (10:27 UTC) from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia. The first launch attempt on Nov. 6 was postponed due to a fire alarm at the mission operations control center.

    Apollo 15: “Never Been on a Ride like this Before”

    Our first wheels on the Moon. On the Apollo 15 mission, the Lunar Roving Vehicle allowed the astronauts to cover a much greater distance on the Moon than the previous three flights had accomplished. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 15 mission. On July 26, 1971, David R. Scott (Commander), James B. Irwin (Lunar Module Pilot) and Alfred M. Worden (Command Module Pilot) launched from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A.

    Apollo 15 set several new records for crewed spaceflight: heaviest payload in a lunar orbit of approximately 107,000 pounds, maximum radial distance traveled on the lunar surface away from the spacecraft of about 17.5 miles, most lunar surface moonwalks (three) and longest total of duration for lunar surface moonwalk (18 hours, 37 minutes), longest time in lunar orbit (about 145 hours), longest crewed lunar mission (295 hours), longest Apollo mission, the first satellite placed in lunar orbit by a crewed spacecraft, and first deep space and operational spacewalk.

    The ride to the International Space Station sees astronauts launched on top of a rocket fuelled by 300 tonnes of propellant. Where on Earth do astronauts take off? When do they experience weightlessness for the first time? And how long does the trip take?

    Soyuz ride into space

    On 28 May 2014, ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst and NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman under the command of Russian cosmonaut Maxim Suraev rocketed into space in a Soyuz spacecraft. This was their voyage.

    For Alexander and Reid it was the first time they saw Earth from space.

    Strapped atop 274 tonnes of rocket propellants delivering 26 million horsepower, it took only six hours to reach their destination, International Space Station.

    Alexander worked as a geophysicist and volcanologist before he was selected as an ESA astronaut in 2009. His Blue Dot mission included an extensive scientific programme of experiments in physical science, biology, and human physiology as well as radiation research and technology demonstrations. All experiments make use of the out-of-this-world laboratory to improve life on Earth or prepare for further human exploration of our Solar System.
