Three New Missions Launch to Track Space Weather

We’re about to launch three new observatories that will study the Sun—and help us protect Earth. Come watch with us!

NASA’s IMAP (Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe) mission, the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory, and NOAA’s Space Weather Follow On–Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1) observatory are scheduled to lift off from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 7:32 a.m. EDT (1132 UTC) on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The IMAP mission will map the boundaries of our heliosphere, the vast bubble created by the Sun’s wind that covers our entire solar system. NASA’s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory will study the ultraviolet glow of Earth’s exosphere, the outermost region of our planet’s atmosphere — helping scientists understand how space weather from the Sun affects our planet.

The SWFO-L1 mission, managed by NOAA and developed with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and commercial partners, will use a suite of instruments to provide real-time measurements of solar wind, along with a compact coronagraph to detect coronal mass ejections from the Sun.

    Three faces of a supernova 💥 #shorts

Three different moments in a far-off supernova explosion were captured in a single snapshot by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The progenitor star exploded more than 11 billion years ago, when the Universe was less than a fifth of its current age of 13.8 billion years.

  • Three Space Station Crew Members Return Home Aboard Soyuz Spacecraft

Three Space Station Crew Members Return Home Aboard Soyuz Spacecraft

Tune in live at 11:30 p.m. EDT, Fri., April 16 as three space travelers return home from the International Space Station. NASA Astronaut Kate Rubins and cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, aboard their Soyuz spacecraft, will make a parachute-assisted landing at 12:56 a.m., Sat., April 17, on the steppes of Kazakhstan, southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan.

During her six month mission, Kate Rubins spent hundreds of hours working on space station experiments, talking with the researchers behind the studies, and serving as an ambassador for science in downlinks with the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and others. She built on experiments conducted during her first mission in 2016, working on new heart research and DNA sequencing.

Watch Three Space Travelers Return Home from the International Space Station

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner of Roscosmos will return to Earth from the International Space Station on Wed., Oct. 21, 2020. Tune in for deorbit burn and landing coverage as their Soyuz spacecraft descends to a parachute-assisted landing, set for 10:55 p.m. EDT southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan.

The three crew members will wrap up a 196-day mission spanning 3,136 orbits of Earth and 83 million miles. Cassidy is completing his third spaceflight for a total of 378 days in space, the fifth highest total among U.S. astronauts. Ivanishin is completing his third flight into space, totaling 476 days. This was Vagner’s first spaceflight. During their expedition, Cassidy, Ivanishin, and Vagner welcomed the arrival of NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley on NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission, the first crewed flight of a commercial spacecraft and the first launch of humans from American soil to the space station since 2011.

  • Proba-2 sees three partial solar eclipses

Proba-2 sees three partial solar eclipses

The total solar eclipse of 13-14 November 2012 was only visible to ground-based observers situated in northern Australia, while ESA’s Sun-watching satellite Proba-2 enjoyed three partial eclipses from its viewpoint in space. The constant change in viewing angle of Proba-2 as it orbits the Earth meant that the satellite passed through the Moon’s shadow a total of three times during the eclipse event. The video was produced from images taken by Proba-2’s SWAP imager, which snaps the Sun in ultraviolet light to reveal stormy active regions on the solar disc.

The apparent noise in the movie results from high energy particles hitting Proba-2’s electronics as the spacecraft passes through the South Atlantic Anomaly. The dimming in the movie is an effect as part of the satellite’s orbit passes through the shadow of the Earth.
