Learn more at http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/iodine-clock-reaction Two clear liquids are mixed together and the audience is told to watch closely… “Don’t take your eyes off the liquid or you’ll miss it!” Then, in a flash, the water changes to ink (or so they think!). Clock reactions like this never fail to capture the students attention, and the Iodine Clock Reaction is one of the most startling chemical demonstrations you’ll ever see. How did that happen? is almost always the reaction, and when students ask How?, theyre ready to learn.

Unlike the classic iodine clock reaction from your high school chemistry class, our new Think Ink! formula uses a kitchen chemistry approach to achieve even better results. And yes… this is the same reaction that Steve Spangler shares in his live performances and recently featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

After a little while, challenge your students to get the liquid back to the bottom of the boiler without turning it over. Works on the same principle as the old Love Meter, common in drugstores and five-and-dimes all over America.

Kepler – A Search for Habitable Planets

“Kepler is a critical component in NASA’s broader efforts to ultimately find and study planets where Earth-like conditions may be present,” said Jon Morse, the Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The planetary census Kepler takes will be very important for understanding the frequency of Earth-size planets in our galaxy and planning future missions that directly detect and characterize such worlds around nearby stars.”

The mission will spend three and a half years surveying more than 100,000 sun-like stars in the Cygnus-Lyra region of our Milky Way galaxy. It is expected to find hundreds of planets the size of Earth and larger at various distances from their stars. If Earth-size planets are common in the habitable zone, Kepler could find dozens; if those planets are rare, Kepler might find none.

In the end, the mission will be our first step toward answering a question posed by the ancient Greeks: are there other worlds like ours or are we alone?

Heres how it works: The tubes are placed into a vacuum mold and heated so they soften. Hot air is then blown into the tube, stretching the warmed plastic to 40 times its original size. When the plastic cools into the shape of the mold, the bottle is ready to fill with your favorite refreshing drink.
