The archipelago is the largest island of the Azores autonomous region of Portugal.
The island has a region called Furnace Valley which is famous for its volcanic landscape. Local cooking methods have been influenced by their surroundings.
Cozido das Furnas is a specialty, stew type dish in the region and is prepared by lowering a pot filled with meat and vegetables into the valleys hot springs and leaving to cook for around 5 hours.

NASA Honors our Servicemembers this Veterans Day
Our journey back to the Moon and onto Mars starts at home, and NASA’s Veterans are a big part of accomplishing that mission. Veterans currently make up 12% of the NASA workforce. Many of the most iconic figures at the agency—our astronauts—have a strong veteran tie. In fact, all NASA astronauts were military pilots until 1965. Of the 385 total NASA Astronauts, 223 are Veterans! Veterans continue to have a sweeping impact on NASA, in every corner of our workforce. Thanks to all the men and women who have served in our armed forces. Have a safe and happy Veterans Day.

Launch of JPSS-2 Weather Satellite & LOFTID Mars Tech Demo (Official NASA Broadcast)
Watch live as a new weather forecasting satellite and experimental Mars technology take to the skies.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Joint Polar Satellite System-2 (JPSS-2) is now set for launch Thursday, Nov. 10 at 4:25 a.m. EST (0925 UTC).
The mission will lift off aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 401 rocket from Space Launch Complex-3 at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. JPSS-2 is a new generation polar-orbiting operational environmental satellite system.
Also aboard the Atlas V 401 rocket will be the secondary payload, NASA’s Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID). LOFTID will demonstrate inflatable heat shield technology for atmospheric entry and re-entry. This technology could enable a variety of proposed NASA missions to destinations such as Mars, Venus, and Titan, as well as returning heavier payloads from low-Earth orbit.

Does Anything Orbit the Moon? We Asked a NASA Technologist
Does anything orbit the Moon? Yes. There are a handful of satellites currently orbiting our closest celestial neighbor. On Nov. 13, 2022, they will welcome CAPSTONE, a CubeSat designed to test a new and unique halo-shaped orbit that will offer stability for long-term missions like our upcoming lunar Gateway space station. What is ESA’s Moonlight initiative?
Going to the Moon was the first step. Staying there is the next ambition.
ESA is a key partner in NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims to return people to the Moon by the end of the decade. Dozens of other international public and private missions are setting their sights on the lunar surface in the coming years.
But to achieve a permanent and sustainable presence on the Moon, reliable and autonomous lunar communications and navigation services are required.
This is why ESA is working with its industrial partners on the Moonlight initiative, to become the first off-planet commercial telecoms and satellite navigation provider.
Following their launch, three or four satellites will be carried into lunar orbit by a space tug and deployed one by one, to form a constellation of lunar satellites. The number and specification of these satellites are currently being defined.
The constellation’s orbits are optimised to give coverage to the lunar south pole, whose sustained sunlight and polar ice make it the focus of upcoming missions.
Moonlight will provide data capacities sufficient to serve these planned and future missions, with a navigation service that enables accurate real-time positioning for all lunar missions.

Hubble sees supergiant star Betelgeuse recovering after blowing its top #shorts
The first clue came when the star mysteriously darkened in late 2019. An immense cloud of obscuring dust formed from the ejected surface as it cooled. Astronomers have now pieced together a scenario for the upheaval. And the star is still slowly recovering; the photosphere is rebuilding itself. And the interior is reverberating like a bell that has been hit with a sledgehammer, disrupting the star’s normal cycle. This doesn’t mean the monster star is going to explode any time soon, but the late-life convulsions may continue to amaze astronomers.

Launch of SS Sally Ride Space Station Supply Mission CRS-18 (Official NASA Broadcast)

The Cygnus spacecraft, named S.S. Sally Ride in dedication to the first American woman in space, is scheduled for liftoff no earlier than Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, at 5:27 a.m. EST (10:27 UTC) from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia. The first launch attempt on Nov. 6 was postponed due to a fire alarm at the mission operations control center.

Testing Galileo for space
Galileo has grown to become Europe’s single largest satellite constellation, and the world’s most accurate satellite navigation system, delivering metre-level positioning to more than 3.5 billion users around the globe.
It all began at ESTEC’s Test Centre, Europe’s largest satellite testing facility. This is where the very first positioning fix took place in March 2013, after the launch into orbit of the initial four IOV satellites. Following that, all 34 Galileo Full Operational Capability satellites also passed by ESTEC for their pre-flight testing.
This 3000 sq. m environmentally-controlled complex, operated and managed by European Test Services for ESA, hosts an array of test equipment able to simulate all aspects of spaceflight, from the noise and vibration of launch to the vacuum and temperature extremes of Earth orbit.
The production line at manufacturer OHB in Germany completed one new satellite every six weeks. After integration each satellite was then shipped to the ESTEC Test Centre for a three-month test campaign, after which it would be accepted by the Agency and declared ready for flight. Some facilities have had to be adapted specifically for Galileo, and the ESTEC Test Centre had to institute new security protocols because this was the first time that satellites with security restrictions were being tested at the site.
Today there are 28 of these Galileo First Generation satellites in service, with 10 more due to be launched in the next years. Upgraded Galileo Second Generation satellites are under development and will follow them into orbit later this decade.

Nebuloasa G299.2-2.9
Aici este nebuloasa G299.2-2.9, aflata la 16000 ani lumina departare. E clar, trebuie sa ii schimbam numele.
Ce vedem este rezultatul final al unei explozii de supernova tip Ia. La inceput, in centru se afla o pitica alba care orbita o stea obisnuita. Pitica alba nu era “nevinovata”: printr-un jet se hranea cu materialul stelei. La un moment dat, pitica alba a devenit atat de “umflata”, incat a explodat, eliberandu-si “cojoacele” in spatiu ca baba Dochia. Iar nebuloasa este rezultautul exploziei.
Culorile din poza arata intensitatea diverselor raze X care vin de la materialul ejectat inca fierbinte. Desi pare simetrica, astronomii spun ca este destul de asimetrica pentru supernovele de tip Ia, de unde interesul lor (ele sunt folosite ca niste “candele” ale universului, de aceea trebuie sa le inteleaga bine). Pentru noi, insa, odata ajunsi acolo, e mai importanta frumusetea ei decat detaliile tehnice.

Cele mai multe planete din Univers sunt orfane!
Adica fara stea. Bantuie spatiul in intunecimea lui, fara caldura si lumina unei stele mama.
O parte din ele au fost ejectate atunci cand s-au format intr-un sistem stelar, acolo unde planetele mari isi gasesc primele orbite stabile, lasand la latitudinea intamplarii planetele mai mici. Cele mai multe planete orfane s-au format insa chiar in spatiu, prin atractie gravitationala, din resturi de praf cosmic ejectate de discurile protoplanetare ale stelelor mari, tot la formarea acestora.
Estimari pe calculator sugereaza ca la fiecare stea din univers corespund sute si chiar mii de planete orfane. Ele nu sunt insa moarte, deoarece au in centrul nou un nucleu inca activ, ceea ce le face sa radieze in infrarosu, asa cum sunt si detectate.
O alta metoda de detectie este cea prin efectul de microlentila: cand planetele orfane trec prin fata unei stele, curbura spatiului generata de planete concentreazaa razele de lumina si, pentru un moment scurt, lumina stelei creste brusc. In felul acesta, stelele orfane ne spun ca exista! -
