🚩 The Battle of Grunwald was one of medieval Europe’s most bloodiest battles. Polish-Lithuanian victory broke the Teutonic Order, marking the end of the order’s expansion along the southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea and the beginning of the decline of its power.

  2. Worth a remark several points. (0) Terms 'Polish' and 'Lithuanian' are misleading. Out of 51 Crown banners, 42 banners were actually Polish, 7 were Ruthenian, 1 Czech and 1 Hungarian. Out of 40 Duchy banners, 36 were Ruthenian (4-6 of them Balto-Slavonic), 4 were Lithuanian. There is no record of either Moldovan or Tatar or Samogitian banners, though it is known of 3 Moldovan banners, 3 Samogitian banners which, however, might operate in another place (say, under Skalva). (1) The Teutonic forces on Grunwald-Zalgeris stood in 3 battle groups: the right wing under Liechtenstein (20 banners) against the Crown 51 banners, the left wing under Walenrod (15 banners) against the Duchy 40 banners. Best 16 banners under the Magister von Juningen stood behind in the reserve. (2) Smolensk 3 banners of the Duchy parted the Crown and the Duchy forces. Hence not all Duchy forces left the battle line. (3) It was not but a few Guest Crusaders who chased retreating Duchy forces but 9 banners out of 15. They were repulsed off the Duchy wagenburg and returned to attack the right flank of the Allies. (4) The german sources claim but 51 banners on the field, however, the allies claim 52 banners taken.
