   The Battle of Roncevaux Pass was the culmination of Charlemagne's campaign of 778 AD into the Iberian Peninsula, the only time he crossed the Pyrenees Mountains in person, in an attempt to create a buffer zone between the Frankish Kingdom and the Emirate of Cordoba.

7. Narrow mountain passes, slow baggage trains, and an unhappy local population is a dangerous combination, as Charlemagne discovered. It's ironic that he angered the populace by tearing down Pamplona's fortress walls when he intended to pacify them with this action. Great video. I had never heard about this battle before and I learned a great deal.
