Algorithms are especially useful in welfare states, where benefits can be delivered more efficiently. For example, Denmark is beginning to use algorithms to make its welfare state more efficient, but it does not seem to fully understand the dangerous potential. The municipality of Gladsaxe in Copenhagen has quietly been experimenting with a system that would use algorithms to identify children at risk of abuse. But that same technology will inevitably take a toll on privacy, family life, and free speech, and can weaken public accountability on the government
