Sea ice is now seasonal, melting and disappearing from large areas during the summer months.
This rapid warming is affecting not only the marine ecosystem but it will have widespread consequences that affect all of us.

Satellites play a vital role in monitoring the rapid changes taking place in the Arctic. Tracking ice lost from the world’s glaciers, ice sheets and frozen land shows that Earth is losing ice at an accelerating rate. Currently more than a trillion tonnes of ice is lost each year. The sooner Earth’s temperature is stabilised, the more manageable the impacts of ice loss will be.

Many of the satellites that gather information on the health of our planet pass over the polar regions pass above the North and South Poles. Satellite ground stations located in these remote areas are best positioned to collect the data and talk to the missions passing above them. This video presents the most northern ground station ESA is using – SvalSat, located within the Arctic Circle – where contact is made with many of ESA’s Earth observation missions. The Svalsat station contributes to ESA’s global tracking station network, Estrack.

Developing a space mission is a long process that involves a lot of tests, sometimes in harsh environments. An airborne campaign was recently carried out in the Arctic between Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard. Enduring temperatures of 30 degrees below zero, a team tested an airborne version of an imaging microwave radiometer to support the development of a potential satellite mission for Europe’s Copernicus programme.

This week, #NASAExplorers head back in time…by going underground. In the Arctic, a frozen layer of soil – permafrost – trapped dead plants and animals for thousands of years. As the climate warms, that soil is beginning to thaw, releasing carbon dioxide and methane.
This animation shows changes in ice volume in Antarctica, Greenland and the Arctic ocean measured by the CryoSat satellite, 2010–15. CryoSat’s readings also contribute to our knowledge of global ocean depth.
