Forming fifty miles above the poles in summer, these clouds are known as noctilucent clouds or polar mesospheric clouds — PMCs. A recent NASA long-duration balloon mission observed these clouds over the course of five days at their home in the mesosphere. The resulting photos, which scientists have just begun to analyze, will help us better understand turbulence in the atmosphere, as well as in oceans, lakes, and other planetary atmospheres, and may even improve weather forecasting.

One balloon is blown up inside of another when you use a magnifying glass to focus light onto their surfaces. You expect the balloons to pop, but only the balloon on the inside bursts. What’s going on here? The Mystery Balloon Pop is a tremendous lesson in the power of the sun’s rays and the absorption of light and heat. Did we mention you’re popping balloons for science? Get started!
Blowing up balloons can be quite the task. You’ll spend a ton of time huffing and puffing while blowing your breath into the rubbery orb. Don’t waste all of that time and energy making yourself light-headed! Try dropping a piece of dry ice into a balloon instead, and watch what happens.
Here’s an easy-to-do experiment using only a balloon and a hex nut from the hardware store. This is the perfect science of sound activity because kids will love it and parents will be left shouting, “STOP!” Be sure to buy enough supplies for all of your friends. This is also the perfect Halloween experiment for making spooky sounds.

The name of the game in so many of the sports is to reduce any opposing resistance. In some instances, the athlete can actually use other competitors to block the wind (drafting in cycling). What does any of this have to do with floating beach balls and flying toilet paper? That fast-moving air flowing around the object creates an area of lower pressure and gives the athlete an advantage. Thanks Bernoulli.

Grab a clear balloon and a penny and learn about interia and centripetal force (that’s right… it’s centripetal – not centrifugal).
