    Closing a chapter in style! 🚀 #shorts

    The Ariane 5 launch vehicle liftoff for flight VA261 from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on 5 July at 23:00 BST (6 July at 00:00 CEST). Flight VA261 carried two payloads into space – the German space agency DLR’s experimental communications satellite Heinrich Hertz and the French communications satellite Syracuse 4b. The flight was the 117th and final mission for Ariane 5, a series which began in 1996.

    Bake the Moon at home 🌝 #shorts

    ESA invites all bakers to try out a special banana bread recipe courtesy of Sens’Astro that contains the main chemical elements found on the Moon with a social media challenge inspired by World Baking Day, celebrated on 17 May.

    Bakers of all ages are invited to share their results with pictures or videos on social media using the hashtag #ESABakes. The deadline for pastry chefs to submit their cakes is 24 May 2022.

    Here are the ingredients:
    – 3 bananas
    – 2 eggs
    – 1 yoghurt (125 ml)
    – 80 g wheat flour
    – 30 g oat flour
    – 40 g almond powder
    – 100 g chocolate chips
    – 2 tablespoons maple syrup
    – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    – 1 teaspoon baking powder
    – 1 pinch of salt
    – 1 handful of nuts

    Copernicus Sentinel-6 ready for launch

    Final preparations are underway in California for the launch of Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, a joint European and US satellite designed to take precise measurements of sea-level change. The satellite forms part of the European Union’s Copernicus Earth Observation programme and will employ a radar altimeter to map sea-surface topography. The satellite will provide fundamental data for climate science and policymaking, helping to protect the 600 million people who live in vulnerable coastal areas. It will also deliver near-realtime information for marine and weather forecasts.

    The mission is a collaboration between ESA, the European Commission, EUMETSAT, NASA and NOAA, with support from the French space agency CNES. Scheduled for launch on 21 November on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on the California coast, the satellite is named Michael Freilich after NASA’s former Director of Earth Science.

    Copernicus Sentinel-6 measuring sea levels using radar altimetry

    This November the newest member of the EU’s Copernicus programme, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, will take to the heavens from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The satellite is named after NASA’s former Director of Earth Observation and is a radar altimetry mission to monitor sea-level rise, wave-height and windspeed.

    The mission is a collaboration between ESA, the European Commission, EUMETSAT, NASA and NOAA, with support from the French space agency CNES. It will continue a three-decade-long time-series of radar altimetry missions that started with the Topex-Poseidon mission and was then followed by the Jason missions.

    Introducing Sentinel-5P

    The preparations of ESA’s latest Earth observation satellite Sentinel-5P, also known as Sentinel-5 Precursor, are finished, and the satellite has been shipped to the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia for launch in October 2017.

    Sentinel-5P will ensure continued data is gathering on Earth’s atmosphere and is the intermediary satellite to fill the gap between the past generation of atmospheric monitoring satellites and the future generation of Sentinel-4 and 5, which will be launched early in the next decade. Sentinel-5P is part of Copernicus,the world’s largest environmental monitoring programme which is operated bythe European Commission.

    ExoMars prepares for liftoff (4K timelapse)

    Timelapse movie following the preparations of the ExoMars 2016 spacecraft in the lead up to launch on 14 March 2016. The movie includes the integration of the entry, descent and landing demonstrator module, Schiaparelli, with the Trace Gas Orbiter, and the journey of the spacecraft inside the Proton rocket as it is moved to the launch pad and raised to a vertical position.

    ExoMars launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan at 09:31 GMT on 14 March. It will arrive at the Red Planet on 19 October. Its mission is to address unsolved mysteries of the planet’s atmosphere that could indicate present-day geological – or even biological – activity, and to demonstrate the landing technologies needed for future missions to Mars.

    Sentinel-3A prepares for liftoff (4K timelapse)

    This timelapse video shows Sentinel-3A, from final preparations to liftoff on a Rockot launcher from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia, at 17:57 GMT (18:57 CET) on 16 February 2016.

    Sentinel-3A is the third satellite to be launched for Europe’s Copernicus environment monitoring programme.

    Designed as a two-satellite constellation – Sentinel-3A and -3B – the Sentinel-3 mission carries a series of cutting-edge instruments for systematic measurements of Earth’s oceans, land, ice and atmosphere. Over oceans, Sentinel-3 measures the temperature, colour and height of the sea surface as well as the thickness of sea ice. These measurements will be used, for example, to monitor changes in sea level, marine pollution and biological productivity. Over land, this innovative mission will monitor wildfires, map the way land is used, provide indices of vegetation state and measure the height of rivers and lakes.

    ExoMars 2016: launch to Mars

    Animation visualising milestones during the launch of the ExoMars 2016 mission and its cruise to Mars. The mission comprises the Trace Gas Orbiter and an entry, descent and landing demonstrator module, Schiaparelli, which are scheduled to be launched on a four-stage Proton-M/Breeze-M rocket from Baikonur during the 14–25 March 2016 window.

    About ten-and-a-half hours after launch, the spacecraft will separate from the rocket and deploy its solar wings. Two weeks later, its high-gain antenna will be deployed. After a seven-month cruise to Mars, Schiaparelli will separate from TGO on 16 October. Three days later it will enter the martian atmosphere, while TGO begins its entry into Mars orbit.

    LISA Pathfinder prepares for liftoff (4K timelapse replay)

    This timelapse video shows the preparations for LISA Pathfinder’s launch at Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The video spans three weeks, starting on 12 November 2015 with the completed and fuelled spacecraft and ending on the 3 December launch day.

    Over this period, the spacecraft was attached to the payload adaptor of the Vega launcher, encapsulated within the half-shells of the rocket fairing, transferred to the launcher assembly area, and installed on top of Vega inside the mobile gantry, which was rolled back shortly before liftoff.

    LISA Pathfinder will test key technologies for space-based observation of gravitational waves – ripples in the fabric of spacetime that are predicted by Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity.

    Avec Vega, qui vient complĂ©ter la famille des lanceurs disponibles Ă  Kourou, l’Europe est dĂ©sormais Ă  mĂȘme de rĂ©pondre Ă  toute la gamme des besoins de lancement, que ce soit pour mettre sur orbite des petits satellites scientifiques et d’observation de la Terre ou pour entreprendre des missions de vaste envergure comme l’envoi de vĂ©hicules ESA de ravitaillement Ă  destination de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS).

    Vega a dĂ©collĂ© pour la premiĂšre fois Ă  10h00 GMT (11h00 heure de Paris, 7h00 heure locale) de son nouveau pas de tir, et son vol de qualification s’est parfaitement dĂ©roulĂ©.
