After launching to the International Space Station on March 2, 2023, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 mission is wrapping up its time in orbit, with a return to Earth in early September 2023.
NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, UAE (United Arab Emirates) astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev spent their months on the orbiting lab conducting scientific investigations and technology demonstrations, including running a student robotic challenge, studying plant genetic adaptations to space, and monitoring human health in microgravity to prepare for exploration beyond low Earth orbit and to benefit life on Earth.
The astronauts also released Saskatchewan’s first satellite, which tests a new radiation detection and protection system derived from melanin.

Where are the Moon rocks from the Apollo missions kept? When theyโre not being studied by institutions or enjoyed by museumgoers, NASA has a specialized Lunar Sample Curation Laboratory at NASAโs Johnson Space Center to store and keep these otherworldly samples safe. Studying these samples helps us learn more about the origin of not only our moon, but our planet. Deputy Apollo Sample Curator (Sept 2019 โ Dec 2022) Dr. Juliane Gross explains more about lunar sample curation.

This image was captured by NIRCam, Webbโs primary near-infrared camera, and contains the lensing galaxy cluster SDSS J1226+2149. It lies at a distance of around 6.3 billion light-years from Earth, in the constellation Coma Berenices. By combining Webbโs sensitivity with the magnifying effect of gravitational lensing, astronomers were able to use this gravitational lens to explore the earliest stages of star formation in distant galaxies. To do so, they relied on earlier studies by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, which provided the โprescriptionโ for this gravitational lens.

An international crew is preparing to launch to the International Space Station aboard NASAโs SpaceX Crew-7 mission.
NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov of Roscosmos will perform research technology demonstrations, science experiments, and maintenance activities aboard the microgravity laboratory.
Crew-7 is targeted to launch no earlier than 3:27 a.m. EDT Saturday, Aug. 26 from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy. As part of the agencyโs Commercial Crew Program, Crew-7 marks the eighth human spaceflight mission supported by a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and the seventh crew rotation mission to the space station since 2020 for NASA.

The fraction of light that an object reflects is called its โalbedoโ. Most planets have a low albedo, either because they have an atmosphere that absorbs a lot of light, or because their surface is dark or rough. Earth, for example, only reflects around 30% of incoming sunlight. Exceptions tend to be frozen ice-worlds, or planets like Venus which have a cloud layer (reflecting 75% of the Sunโs light in Venusโ case).
LTT9779 bโs 80% of albedo came as a surprise because the planetโs side facing its star is estimated to be around 2000 ยฐC. Any temperature above 100 ยฐC is too hot for clouds of water to form, but the temperature of this planetโs atmosphere should even be too hot for clouds made of metal or glass.
LTT9779 b can form metallic clouds despite being so hot because the atmosphere is oversaturated with silicate and metal vapours.

๐ฉ The Great Raid of 1355 that devastated southern France was likened to a “demonic raid” by the locals. In the famous “Apocalypse tapestries” Louis of Anjou commissioned in 1373, it is said that Edward III is depicted as a demon followed by his five sons. The English expedition into southern France laid the groundwork for the upcoming offensive a year later, which would culminate in the famous Battle of Poitiers (1356).

๐ฉ In January 871, Alfred the Great, then a prince of only 21, led an army in battle against the invading Vikings, commanded by Halfdan, one of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons. For his valiant defence of his kingdom against a stronger army and his reforms in the reconstruction of Wessex and beyond, he became known as ‘the Great’ – no other English king or queen earned that sobriquet.
