    ESA highlights 2019

    As the year comes to a close, it is once again time to look back and reflect on some of the achievements and highlights of European spaceflight. The new Gaia star catalogue and the launch of Cheops are keeping ESA at the forefront of space science, as will Solar Orbiter, being prepared for launch next year. The Copernicus programme continues to be the largest Earth observation programme in the world, with ESA preparing even more missions. On the Space Station, Luca Parmitano became the third European to command an ISS expedition. During his second mission, he made some of the space programme’s most complex and demanding spacewalks. At the end of 2019, the ESA Space19+ ministerial conference agreed to give ESA its largest budget ever and expressed continued support for Europe’s independent access to space with Ariane 6 and Vega-C.

  • Locally-sourced on the Moon

    Locally-sourced on the Moon

    This month space experts from all over the world convened in Luxembourg for the first Space Resources Week to discuss how best to explore our Solar System sustainably and limit costly transport of resources from Earth – for example can we produce water and oxygen on the Moon?

    From extracting water to creating metals from lunar dust, preparing for the next century of exploration will take industry and commercial partnerships off Earth while using resources we find there.

    The first days of the convention included a professional course with space engineers, scientists and lawyers and economists followed by a space mining summit on the legal and business aspects and technical challenges of resource use.

    On the last two days of Space Resource Week ESA organised a workshop together with the Luxembourg Space Agency to plan the steps Europe will take in the next five years. With over 350 participants from a broad range of disciplines including academia, industry, mining and energy companies as well as politicians, entrepreneurs, investors and economists.

    This is just the beginning, humankind is returning to the Moon and we are setting the international collaboration required to do this sustainably and in partnership, we are an inter-disciplinary community of space resource personnel and will convene again next year to review the progress made towards some key breakthroughs, making Europe a leader in this field.

  • Hera: Our planetary defence mission

    Hera: Our planetary defence mission

    Hera will show us things we’ve never seen before. Astrophysicist and Queen guitarist Brian May tells the story of our mission that would be humanity’s first-ever spacecraft to visit a double asteroid.

    The asteroid system – named Didymos – is typical of the thousands that pose an impact risk to our planet, and even the smaller of the two would be big enough to destroy an entire city if it were to collide with Earth.

    Hera will help us to find out if it would be possible to deflect such an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. The mission will revolutionise our understanding of asteroids and how to protect ourselves from them, and therefore could be crucial for saving our planet.

    First, NASA will crash its DART spacecraft into the smaller asteroid – known as Didymoon – before Hera comes in to map the resulting impact crater and measure the asteroid’s mass. Hera will carry two CubeSats on board, which will be able to fly much closer to the asteroid’s surface, carrying out crucial scientific studies, before touching down. Hera’s up-close observations will turn asteroid deflection into a well-understood planetary defence technique.

    The Hera mission will be presented to our Space19+ meeting this November, where Europe’s space ministers will take a final decision on flying the mission, as part of the Agency’s broader planetary defence initiatives that aim to protect European and world citizens.

    How do you build a spaceship? It’s not easy – because space is hard. It’s endless vacuum, hot and cold at the same time, streaked with radiation – and you have to fly at eight kilometres per second just to get there. It takes clever engineering – and costly research and development – to operate in orbit. Space is risky, but past payoffs have been vast. Our track record lets us manage that risk, balancing it with chances for rich rewards.

    We are Europe’s space agency, enabling its 22 Member States to achieve results that no individual nation can match. we combines space mission development with supporting labs, test and operational facilities plus in-house experts covering every aspect of space, supported through the our Basic Activities.

    For our Space19+ set for the end of this year, we are asking Europe’s space ministers for a substantial investment for Basic Activities, to modernise infrastructure and speed up R&D cycles, helping to support a new generation of space missions as efficiently as possible.
