Such traps would work even today. That is why flanking scouts are important. I am sure troops learn how to do this with modern explosives.

I hate formations like this ,me personally I'd have atleast 3-4 men in each scout group. One at the front and back and two on each side . So that gives total of 24 men to make a dash and report enemy movement
