i get how that's smart but that's also plain stupid, if he was captured, let's say, the Roman Empire would have to submit to the enemy's demands, or if he was executed, the Empire would fall into turmoil and civil war over the succession with the enemy pouncing on the divided Romans, being an utter disaster for the Romans in both cases. kind of like "either that's very brave or very stupid" but in this case, it's plain stupid
