Good strategy often boils down to having more soldiers in the fight than your enemy, and this is a great example. The English army was bigger, but they were outnumbered on the actual frontline, allowing the Scots to win and lose far fewer troops.
This same strategy is what allowed Napoleon to win so many battles against larger enemies.
