Andrew Shepherd of the University of Leeds is a leading climate scientist working with ESA and NASA. Snow leopards are one of the most elusive animals on the planet, and finding them is anything but simple. Koustubh Sharma and the scientists at the Snow Leopard Trust use Microsoft AI to analyze camera trap images and generate a database of snow leopard sightings, a process that used to take ten days now takes ten minutes. More importantly, the Snow Leopard Trust gets access to critical data faster, so they can develop better conservation efforts and protect this threatened species.
Snow is one part of the cryosphere that many of us have actually encountered, but it also plays a crucial role in regulating Earth’s climate. Through decades of remote sensing, NASA has kept a close eye on the ebb and flow of snow cover. #NASAExplorers also venture into the field at the far reaches of Earth to study snow, a critical resource for the millions of people who rely on it for drinking water.

The long Antarctic winter is turning to spring at the Franco-Italian Concordia research station, which has resisted the brutal forces of nature about 1200 km inland on top of an icy plateau 3000 m above sea level. During winter, the Sun doesn’t rise above the horizon for about three months, and temperatures can drop down to -80°C.
This video shows the harsh but beautiful landscape around the station on one of the last sunny days in May and then how the darkness engulfed Concordia with its 12-strong winter-over team. Finally the Sun returned on 10 August — a memorable moment for the men and women who keep the station running and conduct the scientific work in those difficult, almost space-like conditions.
