  1. Ice is less dense than water because as the temperature cools, there is less kinetic energy between the water molecules therefore allowing hydrogen bonds to form which create a crystal lattice structure. This structure is an "open" structure (meaning lots of space) making ice float on water because it is less dense than water. So the key is to find a mystery fluid that is less dense than water but denser than ice
