Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, on July 16 and President Eisenhower signed it into law on July 29, 1958. NASA opened for business on Oct. 1, 1958.   1. Well, we are still stuck with subsonic/transonic flight commercially due to fears of disruption as a result of sonic booms. Though I have a feeling that a sonic boom will always happen when any object breaks the sound barrier while in air.
