“She always taught us that there’s no reason you can’t do these things.” NASA astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps recalls who encouraged her to reach for the stars and talks about inspiring the #Artemis generation of young girls.
Apollo 12 launched from Cape Kennedy on Nov. 14, 1969, into a cloudy, rain-swept sky. Launch controllers lost telemetry contact at 36 seconds, and again at 52 seconds, when the Saturn V launch vehicle was struck by lightning.
In addition to continuing Apollo’s lunar exploration tasks, Charles Conrad, Alan Bean, and Richard Gordon deployed the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, a set of investigations left on the Moon’s surface to gather data.
On Oct 18, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch performed the first all-woman spacewalk. Koch & Meir replaced a faulty battery charge/discharge unit that failed to activate after a previous spacewalk. This was the fourth spacewalk for Christina Koch and the first for Jessica Meir.
On Friday, Oct. 18, NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir completed NASA’s first all-woman spacewalk. During the 7-hour, 17-minute spacewalk, the pair replaced a failed power controller and completed several other tasks in preparation for future spacewalks.
Which camera to send to the Moon? The iconic images taken with the Hasselblad 500 series captivated the world. Today, Hasselblad cameras are synonymous with the Apollo missions. We visited Gothenburg to find out how a Swedish camera made it to the Moon.

This short movie shares an impression of some of the scientific highlights from Rosetta’s mission at Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, as told through the voices of scientists working with Rosetta’s vast dataset, two years after the mission ended.
Rosetta launched in 2004 and travelled for ten years to its destination before deploying the lander Philae to the comet’s surface. Following the comet along its orbit around the Sun, Rosetta studied the comet’s surface changes, its dusty, gassy environment and its interaction with the solar wind. Even though scientific operations concluded in September 2016 with Rosetta’s own descent to the comet’s surface, analysis of the mission’s data will continue for decades.
Credits: This is an ESA Web TV production. The video contains artist impressions of the spacecraft (credit: ESA/ATG medialab) and animations/infographics by ESA. Images of the comet are from Rosetta’s OSIRIS and NAVCAM cameras, as well as Philae’s CIVA camera (credits: ESA/Rosetta/MPS for OSIRIS Team MPS/UPD/LAM/IAA/SSO/INTA/UPM/DASP/IDA – CC BY SA 4.0; ESA/Rosetta/NavCam – CC BY-SA IGO 3.0; ESA/Rosetta/Philae/CIVA). Ground-based images were provided by Colin Snodgrass/Alan Fitzsimmons/Liverpool Telescope. The plasma visualisation is based on modelling and simulation by Technische Universität Braunschweig and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, and visualised by Zuse-Institut Berlin. The animation of Philae’s flight across the surface is based on data from Philae’s ROMAP, RPC-MAG, OSIRIS, ROLIS, CIVA CONSERT, SESAME and MUPUS instrument teams, the Lander Control Centre at DLR and the Science Operation and Navigation Center at CNES.

Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, on July 16 and President Eisenhower signed it into law on July 29, 1958. NASA opened for business on Oct. 1, 1958, with T. Keith Glennan as our first administrator. Our history tells a story of exploration, innovation and discoveries. The next 60 years, that story continues. Learn more: https://www.nasa.gov/60
Steffi Valkov is a Flight Operations Engineer at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. Steffi’s current project, UAS Integration in the NAS, has her fulfilling multiple roles which include leading flight operations working groups, developing flight test scenarios, and control room duties.
NASA celebrates the lives and careers of the Langley West Computing Unit who helped America win the space race of the 1950s and 60s. The lives of these unsung heroines is captured in the book and film “Hidden Figures”.
Dr. Valerie Wiesner is a materials research engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. She is responsible for evaluating high-temperature interactions between Calcium-Magnesium Aluminosilicate and Environmental Barrier Coating materials for aircraft turbine engine development.
Long, long ago men and women on Earth gazed in wonder at comets that appeared in the sky. What where these mysterious objects? Rosetta and Philae learn about the history of comets from their grandfather, Giotto.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law July 2, 1964 by President Lyndon Baines Johnson, the namesake of NASA¹s Johnson Space Center. NASA employees and retirees from around the Nation join together to share their stories as they remember the past, discuss diversity and look forward to future progress.
2014 is a special year: the space community is celebrating the anniversary of the construction of Europe as a space power and 50 years of unique achievements in space.
It started with the creation of two entities, entering into force in 1964, the European Launcher Development Organisation (ELDO) and the European Space Research Organisation (ESRO).
A little more than a decade later, the European Space Agency (ESA) would be established, replacing these two organisations and since then serving European cooperation and innovation.
This video recalls the importance of Europe efforts in space and its successes with now a guaranteed and independent access to space and several programs covering all possible areas from Science, to Earth Observation, Human Spaceflight, Telecom and Navigation.
In this edition of Space we look back at the past 50 years of space in Europe; five decades of discovery, drama and innovation that have had a profound impact on how we see ourselves and our planet. Historian John Krige gives his insight on how Europe’s space sector has evolved, while veteran space scientists recount their experiences in major missions and launches.
