    ESA turns 50! 🎉 Meet some of the brilliant people behind half a century of missions and discoveries.

    Roy Gibson was ESA’s very first Director General. Born in 1924, he led the Agency from its foundation in 1975 until 1980.

    Ulf Merbold was the first ESA astronaut to fly in space, as part of the crew of the STS-9 Spacelab 1 mission on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1983.

    Claudie Heigneré made history in 2001 as the first female European astronaut on a ‘taxi flight’ to the International Space Station.

    Gerhard Schwehm was ESA’s first planetary scientist, working on the Giotto mission that provided the first close-up images of a comet nucleus. He then became Mission Manager for the Rosetta mission until his retirement.

    Paolo Ferri dedicated 20 years to Rosetta, first as Operations Manager, then as Flight Director, and eventually as Head of the Mission Operations Department.

    Elsa Montagnon is currently Head of the Mission Operations Division. Previously, she was Spacecraft Operations Manager for BepiColombo, Europe’s first mission to Mercury, launched in 2018.

    Josef Aschbacher became ESA Director General in 2021. From 2016–21, he was ESA Director for Earth Observation Programmes He has been a key leader of the European Copernicus programme, which is now considered to be one of the most successful Earth observation programmes in the world.

    Meet the team behind EarthCARE

    As we approach the launch of ESA’s EarthCARE mission, we caught up with some of the scientists, engineers and experts behind the mission.

    With the climate crisis increasingly tightening its grip, ESA’s Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer mission (EarthCARE) will shed new light on the complex interactions between clouds, aerosols and radiation in Earth’s atmosphere.

    EarthCARE is the largest and most complex Earth Explorer mission. It comes at a critical time in the development of kilometre-scale resolution, global climate models and will provide an important contribution to an improved understanding of cloud convection and its role in Earth’s radiation budget.

    EarthCARE is an ESA mission, but it has been developed as a cooperation between ESA and JAXA, the Japanese Space Agency.

    Meet the largest “mirror” in the Universe! 🪞✨ #shorts

    The fraction of light that an object reflects is called its ‘albedo’. Most planets have a low albedo, either because they have an atmosphere that absorbs a lot of light, or because their surface is dark or rough. Earth, for example, only reflects around 30% of incoming sunlight. Exceptions tend to be frozen ice-worlds, or planets like Venus which have a cloud layer (reflecting 75% of the Sun’s light in Venus’ case).

    LTT9779 b’s 80% of albedo came as a surprise because the planet’s side facing its star is estimated to be around 2000 °C. Any temperature above 100 °C is too hot for clouds of water to form, but the temperature of this planet’s atmosphere should even be too hot for clouds made of metal or glass.

    LTT9779 b can form metallic clouds despite being so hot because the atmosphere is oversaturated with silicate and metal vapours.

    Four astronauts have been selected for NASA’s Artemis II mission: Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialist Christina Koch from NASA, and mission specialist Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency.

    Artemis II will be NASA’s first crewed flight test of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft around the Moon to verify today’s capabilities for humans to explore deep space and pave the way for long-term exploration and science on the lunar surface.

They explain the incredible team effort required to bring this complex project from early inception, manufacturing of the satellite, accommodating its payloads and ensuring a successful launch to pave the way for exciting scientific discoveries. Ariel is one ESA’s science missions that will be launched in 2029 and will discover the composition of exoplanets by examining their atmospheres.

    They explain how the project team is structured and a bit about the international collaboration involved. They also touch on the importance of building the right team and creating a great team spirit.

    Meet NASA’s Psyche Team Who Will Measure the Asteroid’s Magnetic Field

    NASA’s Psyche team will measure the asteroid’s magnetic field using a magnetometer. This instrument is composed of two identical high-sensitivity magnetic field sensors located at the middle and outer end of a 6-foot (2-meter) boom on the spacecraft. The magnetometer team is based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Technical University of Denmark.

    The Psyche mission is led by Principal Investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton of Arizona State University. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is responsible for the mission’s overall management, system engineering, integration and test, and mission operations. Maxar Technologies is providing a high-power solar electric propulsion spacecraft chassis.

    “I have dreamt of becoming an astronaut since my childhood.”

    Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide was born on December 28th, 1968 in Tokyo, Japan. He received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Keio University in 1992, and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Houston, Cullen College of Engineering in 1997. He is the third Japanese astronaut to walk in space and has flown on both the Space Shuttle and Soyuz spacecraft. He launches on April 23rd at 5:49 a.m. aboard the NASA SpaceX Crew-2 mission to the International Space Station.

    Meet Thomas Pesquet, Crew-2 Mission Specialist

    “I like new experiences. I like to learn all the time.”

    Born in Rouen, France, Thomas Pesquet is a European Space Agency Astronaut and is assigned as a Crew-2 Mission Specialist.

    Thomas was selected as an ESA astronaut in May 2009. In 2016, he launched to the International Space Station for his six-month Proxima mission, as a flight engineer for Expeditions 50 and 51. His busy mission was the first to see all four cargo vehicles in operation at the time (HTV, Cygnus, Dragon and Progress). He tracked and captured two of them using the Station’s robotic arm.

    During his stay in space, he took part in over 50 experiments and the six crew members set a record for hours of time spent working on science. Other highlights of his mission included two spacewalks to maintain the Station: one to replace batteries on an electrical channel, and one to fix a cooling leak and service the robotic arm.

    Thomas is a black belt in judo and enjoys basketball, jogging, swimming, squash and outdoor sports such as mountain biking, kite surfing, sailing, skiing and mountaineering.     Meet Megan McArthur, Crew-2 Pilot

    “It’s all about exploration”

    Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, NASA Astronaut Megan McArthur is currently assigned as Pilot of the NASA SpaceX Crew-2 mission to the International Space Station.

    Her previous spaceflight experience includes STS-125 for the servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope. McArthur worked as the flight engineer and robotic arm operator. She carefully retrieved the Hubble Space telescope and placed it in the shuttle’s cargo bay. The STS-125 mission was accomplished in 12 days, 21 hours, 37 minutes and 9 seconds, traveling 5,276,000 miles in 197 Earth orbits.

    Meet Shane Kimbrough, Crew-2 Commander

    NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough was born June 4, 1967, in Killeen, Texas. He graduated from The Lovett School, Atlanta, Georgia, in 1985; received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, in 1989 and a Master of Science degree in Operations Research from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998. He has completed 6 spacewalks and logged 189 days in space. He has flown on both the Space Shuttle and Soyuz spacecraft. He launches on April 23nd at 5:49 a.m. aboard the NASA SpaceX Crew-2 mission to the International space station.
