Heroes of Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea – 2nd Persian Invasion of Greece (ALL PARTS)

🚩 I merged the episodes of the 2nd Persian Invasion series into one video, for easier viewing. The Second Persian Invasion was a pivotal moment in Ancient Greek history. Xerxes I, seeking revenge for his father’s defeat at Marathon, led a massive army to conquer Greece. The Greeks, led by Athens and Sparta, united to face this existential threat.

🚩 The conquest of the Mamluks by Selim I was the largest military venture any Ottoman Sultan had ever attempted. Egypt proved extremely profitable for the empire as it produced more tax revenue than any other Ottoman territory and supplied about 25% of all food consumed. Meanwhile, Mecca and Medina officially made Selim and his descendants the Caliphs of the entire Muslim world until the early 20th century.

🚩 After the defeat at Dara the year prior, the Sassanian King of Kings Kavad I was eager to regain the initiative in the war against the Eastern Roman Empire. His plan was to send an army along the Euphrates and strike deep into Syria, with the ultimate objective being to capture Antioch and cut the Romans off from Palestine and Egypt. But the local Roman garrisons spotted the Persian army and relayed the message to Belisarius, who made way to intercept Kavad’s army in Syria.

🚩 Heraclius’ campaigns are an example of an indirect approach to war strategy. And although his gains would be swiftly lost in the wake of the Muslim Conquest, the method by which they were achieved would remain a point of pride in Byzantine military history.
