Astronaut coffee break: let’s talk landing

Take a break with ESA astronauts Alexander Gerst, Samantha Cristoforetti, Luca Parmitano and Thomas Pesquet as they discuss living and working in space. In this video, our astronauts talk about their experiences of landing in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft upon returning from the International Space Station.

During a shared coffee break, Luca compares his first landing to his most recent landing – the second of which he found much softer than the first. Thomas finds humour in his experience of landing horizontally, while Alex describes a particularly high gravitational load on his return to Earth.

This clip is part of a series of four filmed in February 2020, following Luca’s return from the ISS mission on 6 February. It was filmed in the crew quarters of the German Aerospace Center DLR’s :envihab facility next to ESA’s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany.

L’urina dell’astronauta viene riciclata – in acqua potabile.

  • Fit for space – Soyuz training

Fit for space – Soyuz training

In the first episode of our ‘Fit for space’ training series, ESA astronauts Samantha Cristoforetti and Luca Parmitano share how crewmembers prepare for their journey to the International Space Station in the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Training for the critical moments of Soyuz spaceflight – launch, ascent, docking and landing – take place at Roscosmos’ Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre (GCTC) in Star City, Russia. Here, astronauts use sophisticated Soyuz simulators to practice procedures and respond to emergency situations.

The Soyuz simulators at GCTC are designed to act and be operated in exactly the same way as the spacecraft itself. Astronauts must demonstrate their proficiency in manually controlling the Soyuz to prepare for the unlikely event that automated and ground-based operations fail.

They also prepare for emergency events that could occur onboard the International Space Station itself.

Message from ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti

Italian ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, speaking from the European Astronaut Centre near Cologne in Germany, has a message of thanks to all those who’ve entered our Lunar 3D printing competition so far. A new lunar analogue test facility, called Luna for short, is currently being set up at EAC to test the technologies and techniques needed for any future Moon base – with 3D printing high on the list. And a team ESA’s technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, is overseeing a project to research in detail how 3D printing could be used in such a Moon base. We’re also interested in the human factor: what would you 3D print to make the Moon feel like home? That’s why we’re crowdsourcing your ideas through this competition. The closing date is 23 September 2018.

ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti reads from Douglas Adam’s “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” for towel day from the European laboratory Columbus on the International Space Station.

The Guide has a few things to say on the subject of towels. A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.

To all you froods on the mostly harmless planet Earth, happy towel day!

Towel Day is an annual celebration on 25 May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams when fans around the universe proudly carry a towel in his honour.

The astronauts on board the International Space Station get hungry from time to time during their long day of work in microgravity. We asked Samantha Cristoforetti, ESA astronaut on board the ISS for the Futura mission, to tell us about the kind of healthy snack she likes to eat during her breaks.

  • Italy to Indian Ocean

    Italy to Indian Ocean

Similar to ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti’s night timelapse over Italy and Egypt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgw36RCQPvM) but taken during the day, this video takes you on a 30-second journey over Italy, passing Greece while flying over the Mediterranean Sea to follow the Nile and finish at the Indian Ocean.

Looking out from the International Space Station’s Cupola observatory while circling Earth at speeds of 28 800 km/h, the 5500 km flight took Samantha around 12 minutes. Images from a Space Station camera were joined together to create this video and make the flight seem even faster.

The astronauts on the Space Station spend as much time as possible on science. During her 40-hour working week Samantha runs many experiments from Italy’s ASI space agency and ESA, and takes part in even more from scientists all over the world.

Samantha is living and working on board the International Space Station as part of the six-strong Expedition 42 and 43 crew. Follow her Futura mission at http://samanthacristoforetti.esa.int.

  • Space food and the good side of lipid fat

Space food and the good side of lipid fat

We could call them the good, the bad and the ugly! No, we are not talking of spaghetti westerns… Instead, we are talking about a type of fat called lipids. Often we speak badly about them, but some are essential to our health as they reduce chronic inflammation, help lower ‘bad’ cholesterol – LDL – and are a valuable aid in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

We asked Samantha Cristoforetti, ESA astronaut on board of the International Space Station for the Futura mission, to tell us about which king of healthy fats she and the other astronauts can enjoy while on orbit.
